What’s available?

In-Course Scholarships 

Apply for these awards if you’re a current undergraduate NOT in your graduating year.

  • Some awards are open to students in any faculty/program
  • Others are specific to certain faculties, programs, years, etc. This means the list of available scholarships you see in Mosaic might be different than your friends’!
  • Open to full-time AND part-time students
  • International students can apply for the same awards as domestic students

Awards for Graduating Students 

Graduating this spring/summer? Apply by April 30. If you’re graduating next fall you’ll be able to apply the winter term AFTER your convocation — even if you lose access to Mosaic.

Community Contribution Awards 

These non-monetary awards go on your transcript to recognize your extracurricular work and community involvement.

  • Open to full-time AND part-time undergrads in second year and above
  • International students can apply for the same awards as domestic students
  • Maximum three Community Contribution Award applications per student per year

Make sure you read each award’s description carefully to make sure it’s right for your extracurricular achievements!

Travel and Exchange Scholarships

We can help you travel the world! Apply for these awards to help fund a McMaster Exchange or other study-abroad opportunity.

McMaster Travel and Exchange Awards are broken down into two categories:

  • Travel Awards: Apply if you’re participating in the McMaster Exchange Program OR another type of global experience (research, internship, language study, etc.)
  • Exchange Awards: Apply if you’re going on a formal exchange through the McMaster Exchange Program ONLY.

Some other options to fund your travel/exchange experience:

Academic Grants

These grants are awarded based on your academic achievements AND demonstrated financial need.

  • OSAP applications are used to determine financial need
  • Some grants may include additional steps including submitting an application and/or portfolio or participating in an interview or audition
  • Full academic grant regulations can be found in the Undergraduate Calendar

Scholarship Spotlights

Renaissance Award

  • Take some time to broaden your horizons outside your program of study!
  • Value: Up to $25,000 for a 4- to 12-month self-directed enrichment experience
  • Past winners have travelled to India, Nepal, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, throughout Canada and the United State and more! Learn more about some past winners’ experiences
  • Apply through Mosaic

Rhodes Scholarship

  • Your chance to study at Oxford University in England for 2-3 years!
  • Value: At least $50,000/year for tuition, fees, living expenses
  • Eleven Rhodes Scholars are chosen from across Canada each year (two in Ontario)
  • Apply through Mosaic to be one of McMaster’s nominees

Killam Fellowship

Project Hero 

  • Financial support to the sons and daughters of Canadian military killed while serving in an active mission.
  • Value: Tuition waiver + residence (double room) and a regular meal plan at McMaster covered

Who can apply?

International AND domestic undergraduate students

  • Minimum GPA of 8.0 (7.0 for Travel and Exchange Awards) is required, unless stated otherwise in award terms
  • Many awards are automatically granted based on grades and do not require an application
  • Visit the Undergraduate Calendar for the full terms and conditions for all scholarships and academic grants

Graduate Students

  • Awards for Graduate Students are offered through the School of Graduate Studies
  • Apply by clicking “Apply for Financial Aid” in Mosaic

Nursing Students 


How to apply

You can apply for scholarships through your Mosaic Student Centre starting Jan. 1 each year.

  1. Click “Apply for Aid and Awards” after logging into your Mosaic homepage OR “Apply for Financial Aid” in your Student Center
  2. Complete your personal profile by clicking the current “Aid Year”. Step-by-step instructions — if you applied for a bursary or the work program this will already be done
  3. Find the scholarships open to you under the “Aid by Application” tab
  4. Expand the category headings to review awards applications and requirements
  5. Make sure to click “Apply for this Award” AND submit all documents listed under “Print Required Documents List”
  6. Bring all necessary documents to Student Financial Aid & Scholarships (Gilmour Hall, Room 120)

When do I apply?

  • Applications open in Mosaic Jan. 1
  • You can preview scholarship requirements BEFORE the application opens
  • Graduating in the fall? Apply the winter AFTER your convocation
  • Deadlines for McMaster scholarships: April 30 (March 29 for Travel/Exchange)

After you apply 

Check the status of your application under “View Financial Aid Applications” in your Mosaic Student Center.

Find the bursaries and scholarships you’ve been granted under “View Financial Aid Awards”.

Scholarship recipients are confirmed by the dates found under Important Dates.

Scholarship payments 

  • Payments will be deposited to your McMaster student account
  • If your fees are paid in full, you can receive a refund. Enroll in direct deposit with the University to receive your money faster!
  • Check your student account summary in Mosaic for pending award payments (displayed as “Pending McMaster Aid and Awards”)
  • Payments for most scholarships are deposited after the add/drop deadline in September. Travel/Exchange Scholarships are paid in the spring, Awards for Graduating Students are paid over the summer. Eligibility requirements must be maintained to receive funding.
